How scientists and technologists can be agents of change?
He was a leather scientist and had long term visions for the nation. I too shall take forward the debate on whether science and tech should adapt to people or people should adapt to them. Since ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Greek and the Indus Valley civilization, it has been the nature of man to be on a relentless quest for knowledge. The journey from being hunters and gatherers to "technological animals" has also thrown some serious issues regarding the value, purpose and relevance of the advancements.
The tannery industry possessed some drawbacks like the stench and difficult tasks and hence used to be looked down upon. Dr. Y. Nayudamma identified them and devised scientific ways to remove the stench and enhance the skills of the workers. He also promoted the products and improved the quality of leather so that the incomes of the workers can be increased.
His visions are reflected in the national schemes.
1. PMJDY- Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojna has opened over 50 crore bank accounts to enable financial inclusion and empowerment. Dr. Y. Nayudamma had once mentioned that if a woman had a bank account, she would be treated differently and respected.
2. Atamanirbhar Bharat- He believed that the problems of India are context-specific and cannot be solved using western remedies.
3. Sab Ka Sath-Sab Ka Vikas-Sab Ka Prayas- The underlying principle being the ability of all being equally treated, and participating in national endeavours together.
He firmly believed that:
1. Education should release the inner potential of all and make them self reliant.
2. Nationality drives the individual through community participation and will ensure the rapid progress of our nation.
His birth centenary year will remind us of our duties in our respective domains and motivate the ones on the path of betterment of humanity with care, concern and responsibility.
